…You have brought relief to the poor baker, he said, a man who labours day and night for all of us, both rich and poor. While many spend their nights in clubs or asleep, Apostolis rises before dawn, his hands kneading the dough so that when the sun rises, the people may have warm bread with Nutella or jam and lift their voice to thank God for His gift. «Bread strengthens the heart of man», says the holy prophet David. Remember this, my Dimitrakis. Pray that Christ may keep our baker well, that he may continue to provide for us. Bread is something great. In our Church, it is called Artos. But know this: there is another Bread, one greater than all, who not only sustains the body but grants true life and joy. That Bread is Christ Himself, the Bread of Life.
There are other bakers too, Dimitrakis, though their aprons are not white but black. They are the monks. And they also rise before the sun, labouring in prayer. Every morning, they prepare the true Bread of Life, our Christ, offering Him to the whole world through their prayers…
